Mini Selkie Maids
Selkies are mythological creatures found in Irish, Scottish, Faroese, and Icelandic folklore. They are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. Selkie stories are most often romantic tragedies, with a selkie having to choose to forsake their human family or their home in the sea. Most recently, the gorgeous animated film "Song of the Sea" tells of a selkie girl, Saoirse, who does not know her true origins, and her journey of discovery. After seeing it, I was inspired to make some selkie dolls.
These dolls are 7 inches long. Their bodies and faces are made using reclaimed wool fabric. Their hair and cheeks are felted merino wool roving. Their flippers are made of recycled suede or wool felt, and they are stuffed with organic wool. Their simple, peaceful faces are hand-embroidered. Use the drop down options menu to choose the one who speaks to you the most. They are all looking forward to new friends and adventures.
